Marriage

The Sacrament of Matrimony at St. Michael The Archangel Parish

God has been a part of our journey through life since baptism. Congratulations – as a couple, you are preparing for your wedding and have chosen to include God in this sacred union. By this decision, you have invited God to join you in your life together.

The parish staff stands ready to guide you during the planning, preparation, and celebration of your wedding. It is recommended that you contact one of the priests or the deacon no less than six months prior to your wedding so a date can be set.

As the Church teaches about this beautiful sacrament

“From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which by its very nature is perpetual and exclusive; furthermore, in a Christian marriage the spouses are strengthened and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and the dignity of their state by a special sacrament.”

“By reason of their state in life and of their order, [Christian spouses] have their own special gifts in the People of God.” This grace proper to the sacrament of Marriage is intended to perfect the couple’s love and to strengthen their indissoluble unity. By this grace they “help one another to attain holiness in their married life and in welcoming and educating their children.”

A wedding Mass, which can only be celebrated by a priest, involves the celebration of the Eucharist and reception of Holy Communion. A wedding ceremony can be celebrated by either a deacon or priest. A visiting priest or deacon can marry you with the pastor’s permission.

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.
